I am not sure that rod is removable. I would just rub it with some Scotch-Brite right in the tank. Wipe the tank out as clean as you can and then wipe it with Acetone. Do this in a well ventilated area. Expect to have to send the injectors out to be cleaned and tested. Drive the car a little and then replace the fuel filter once it catches all of the dirt.
