Because that is what we call it in this part of the world.

If I were to go to a junkyard and ask for a "boot," the owner would look at my feet and ask me what was wrong with the ones I was wearing. If I were to go to a truck stop and ask about a "lorry," I would be introduced to someone's daughter or wife. If I were to go into a restaurant and ask for "chips," I would be given a bag of fried potato slices. Etc.

Please don't re-ignite the whole "parking brake" controversy again.
