American labor will always be more expensive than third world labor, irrespective of the actual wage (let's be brutally honest: an American worker can not afford to live on third world wages) because of employer contributions to Social Security, Medicare, worker's comp, perhaps health insurance, perhaps supplemental retirement, etc. Some people do indeed advocate eliminating social safety net programs, but I am not one of them (reduce waste and fraud: yes; eliminate: no).

American manufacturers also have to meet higher environmental and safety standards than third world manufacturers do. I do not advocate relaxing these either (anybody remember when the Cuyahoga River was so polluted that it caught on fire? When I was growing up in DC, the Potomac River was so polluted that people were warned to stay away from it as a health threat). 

I for one do not want to see the United States reduced to third world standards, so *WHERE APPROPRIATE* I support companies who make the effort to manufacture things here. The higher quality of certain American products, such as hand tools, makes some purchasing decisions easy.

My Made in USA carb conversion thread started as a joke, but as I put the list together I was pleasantly surprised how many things in fact are made here. For example, I always assumed the PCV valves were imported from China like the fuel filters, but no: they are clearly stamped "USA." 

I did forget to include the tuna baffle. While I am at the store tonight I will look to see its country of origin.
