The problem with the shift linkage pivot bolt is that it is a really odd size shoulder bolt. If it breaks away from home, chances of finding a replacement over the counter are slim. Carrying a spare in the glove box is indeed cheap insurance.
In a worst case scenario (broken pivot bolt, no spare) you can climb under the car and manually shift into 1st or 2nd gear to limp to a safe haven.
