Before you start tearing the transmission apart:

Side to side shift lever problems, especially in the absence of any other problems, are usually a crossgate cable adjustment. Inability to get into 1st or 2nd = cable too long. Cable is adjusted at the back of the transmission. It's just like the throttle cable hollow bolt -- you don't actually adjust the cable itself, but rather the outer sheath. To make the cable shorter, loosen the lock nut and move the outer sheath back. It's a very fine adjustment -- do not go any further than a full turn then check (since you're pulling on the cable you will need to resnug the lock nut before checking). If you go too far the cable will be too short to get into 5th.
