The ball joint can be locked into the hub by putting a jack under the arm and lifting it. Then you can do the nut up. No modification necessary.

I did make two modifications to Byrne's ball joints:
1) Cut screwdriver slots in the end of the stems to hold them still until they taper locked in the knuckles (the lock nuts want to spin the stems before they have taper locked)
2) Added grease fittings
