I believe it was called a "Stick Shift" was because it came from the floor like a stick.  The shifters that came from the steering wheel were called "Column Shifters" because it came from the steering column.

On my 67 GTO (years ago) I never had a problem with any sticking shifter, and every one I knew with a "Muncie" transmission never had a sticking problem.
