My door lights are LED strips (encased in silicone). I made custom weatherstrip brackets for them to sit in: http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/392407_267173789994545_100001057778755_816318_1797256303_n.jpg The LED strips ride in aluminum channels with only the projecting face exposed -- sides are protected. BTW: LED's on those strips do burn out. I've lost a couple already. Fortunately I've got a door full so it isn't a problem yet. These are brand name strips from Superbright BTW.
