As recently as 2010 the F150 was the largest selling single model vehicle of any kind (car, truck, SUV, etc): http://media.ford.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=31720

I had a very difficult time explaining to Brits on my January trip how ubiquitous pickup trucks are over here. Americans know what we like, and we like trucks (full size trucks mostly). Given the free market choice, a majority of Americans buy a truck, or a truck like SUV.
