The underlying problem with transportation in America is we have no balance. Self driven automobiles, no matter how propelled, are disproportionately necessary. Outside of a few major metropolitan areas, there are no real alternatives. If every single car on I-95 was instantaneously replaced with a Chevrolet Volt or a Nissan Leaf tomorrow morning, traffic would still be just as bad. Fuel is only a small part of the conundrum. Simply increasing American pump prices to global standards would probably have a bigger effect than all the alternative energy research combined.
