One word: coal. 

The United States has the world's largest coal reserves. We are the Saudi Arabia of coal. The United States has enough coal to last us, at the current rate of consumption, nearly 500 years.

Every single product that is made from crude oil can also be made from coal: gasoline, plastics, synthetic fibers, styrofoam, tires, etc. Yes, it is cheaper and easier to make these things from already liquified oil, but there is no reason why, in the absence of oil, you couldn't use coal instead. Coal and oil are made of the same stuff.

Of course an active coal synthesis industry, which the United States did have at the turn of the 20th century before the discovery of Middle East oil, would deplete our reserves in less than 500 years, but certainly not within a century or two.

Burning coal dust in power plants only is a lazy and uncreative use of the abundant resource under our very feet.
