One word: coal. The United States has the world's largest coal reserves. We are the Saudi Arabia of coal. The United States has enough coal to last us, at the current rate of consumption, nearly 500 years. Every single product that is made from crude oil can also be made from coal: gasoline, plastics, synthetic fibers, styrofoam, tires, etc. Yes, it is cheaper and easier to make these things from already liquified oil, but there is no reason why, in the absence of oil, you couldn't use coal instead. Coal and oil are made of the same stuff. Of course an active coal synthesis industry, which the United States did have at the turn of the 20th century before the discovery of Middle East oil, would deplete our reserves in less than 500 years, but certainly not within a century or two. Burning coal dust in power plants only is a lazy and uncreative use of the abundant resource under our very feet. Not many Dinosaurs left to get Dino Juice out of! It is getting harder and harder (read more expensive) to extract it from the earth so it costs more. Adding to that is the ever increasing burden of regulation and taxation. Now they are putting "carbon credits tax" on top of all of the other taxes that will make energy cost even more. The hard fact is gasoline (and all hydrocarbon based energy) is going to get more and more expensive. When it reaches a tipping point and becomes financially cheaper to use other forms of energy we will see a lot more choices. None will be cheaper, just more readily available. The great question is how much will the last gallon of gas cost? The obvious answer is, "Too much". > David Teitelbaum > > --- In dmcnews@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, Marc Levy <malevy_nj@> wrote: > > > > This is all WAY OT for this list, but the truth is that it is easy to complain about gasoline prices because it feels more expensive.
