Just imagine how much better the story would have turned out if JZD had in fact been as ethical, or simply as competent, as his fanciful PR made him out to be. Am I the only person who has read researched and vetted books on the man? Anyone care to dispute that JZD took credit for developing the GTO when in fact he developed the Tempest instead? Anyone care to dispute that JZD publicly claimed to hold more than 200 patents when the actual number is about 50? Anyone care to dispute that JZD inflated public reports of his GM salary more than 100%? (He inflated the public reports in less than 12 months). Anyone care to dispute that JZD cheated Walter Avrea out of hundreds of millions of dollars in royalties, that he raided the coffers of Saf-Gard for personal use, and that he left a mountain of unpaid bills in his wake after leaving the company? Anyone care to dispute that JZD siphoned at least $17 million of British money into GPD? Anyone care to dispute that JZD squandered DMC resources in side ventures that were prohibited by the NIDA agreement (the bus, the snow cat, the airport tug, and God only knows what else)? Anyone care to dispute that JZD did not spend 6 months in Belfast working on the car as required in the NIDA agreement? (Actually that might have been a blessing -- JZD probably would have screwed it up as badly as he screwed up everything else he was personally involved in since leaving the insular cocoon of GM). Anyone care to dispute that JZD hired Bill Collins and Mike Loasby to engineer the car, then refused to even listen to their objections as a slipshod product was designed by Lotus alone? Anyone care to dispute that JZD refused to consider any salvage plan for the company that required him to invest his own money, or relinquish his control? Anyone care to dispute that JZD said "yes" on the FBI videotapes, that he laughed and proclaimed a package of cocaine "as good as gold," and drank a glass of champagne to celebrate his newest venture (drug running)? That people idolize this man baffles me still.
