Paul,
It's probably just old and/or corroded. I would suspect that if your pressures
were too high, it would blow one of the rubber hoses first.
For compressors, you either have NOS from DMC (DMC Midwest is my personal
favorite) if you want the original factory look, or Hervey will sell you new
compressors that fit as well. It's really a just a matter of what you want to
do. Both are cheap and come with accumulator bottles and orifice tubes.
Depending on your VIN, you may or may not have a high pressure switch. It's a
nice feature, but my car has been blowing cold air for 30 years without one.
Just make sure you use the proper oil, and change the accumulator and orifice
tube (very carefully), vacuum down for at least an hour, and recharge. Stick
with R-12 when possible; it's not hard to get. Clean all the dirt off the
condenser, hose out the evaporator and drain tube, make sure your cooling fans
both work, and enjoy the cool drive.

Subject: [DML] AC Compressor blows a back plate?
Driving the car yesterday with my AC on, I hear a big "Whoosh" from the engine
compartment and loss of my AC. After pulling in at home and taking a look, the
rear part of the compressor (original), with the threads that hold the
compressor hose bracket broke away from the main body of the compressor! The
threaded piece of casting just broke apart, with screw and both hoses still
attached. Is there too much pressure somehow or just old? It looks like I need
to buy a new compressor, and wondered what the best choice is? Thanks, Paul
