Registering domains at any ICANN accredited and well known domain registrar is no different than registering at Network Solutions. I use GoDaddy as a domain registrar (not a hosting provider), and I "control" my domains no differently than anyone who uses NS or any other accredited domain registrar. It's also A LOT less expensive than NS. This is much different than hosting providers who buy domains on your behalf (through themselves or any ICANN accredited registrar) and offer all-in-one packages (domains, email, web hosting, etc).
