Had that happen to a diesel Benz I bought used. Was driving home and noticed the temp gauge all the way in the red. Didn't think it was accurate until 5 minutes later when I heard "BOOOOOM" and the car was engulfed in white smoke.
Usually this results in permanent damage. Heads were not blown but damaged and car always overheated aftewards when going up hills.
