Watching the movies for the millionth time today I had a thought....

In BTTF 3 I understand that in 1885 they could not use the Delorean that was already in the cave because that would make it impossible for Marty to get back to Doc from 1955...... But..... Gas was available in the future in 1955... They could have gone to the mine and taken some fuel from it to use in the 1885 Delorean before blowing it up with booze... Right??
