thanks for the insight on the engine 'bucking'. that other low frequency stuff going on just added to the confusion. 
 
and yes, a real blessing to have Rob just down the road, and to have his hand in this car since day one. 
 
Pump cavitation is unusual. I've heard it before, but not much (glad for that, quick way to wreck a pump), and not with a pump like this one. 
 
Funny how sound travels around a car, seemed to me like it was coming thru the back, and strong vibration transmitted thru the shift lever. A reality of its own, or something like that. 
 
Anyhow, Rob said to take the jerry can up to the station, that will take care of it. 
 
and yeah, really glad it turned out to be something simple.

The pump noise would come from the front of the car, the transmission is behind the driver. The pump noise would only happen when the fuel tank is low. You might also have a problem in the fuel tank with the pick-up hose. it could be partially kinked or leaky and it either can't get enough fuel to the pump or it sucks air. Glad it worked out to be something simple but the lesson here is to have Rob fix your fuel gauge and check out the pick-up hose and baffle in the tank. The "slipping" you felt was the engine bucking when it didn't get enough fuel, not the transmission slipping. You are really lucky you are close to Rob and he could make a "house call"!!!!!!
