Steven, What happens when you unplug the start inhibit relay that transfers
power to the solenoid thru the w/r wire. Does it stay engaged? If so then
the w/y wire coming from the key switch is the wire to the problem. The w/y
powers the relay, then powers the solenoid to say engaged.

I found out why my starter run on problem was occurring but I'm still
looking for the root cause. I also believe the cause of the problem is
unique to my car due to a PO rewire job, but I'll throw it out there anyway.
There are two blue-yellow wires that connect together by the starter and
then connect to the starter. One of the B-Y wires goes to the ignition
resistor and the other I traced to the thermotime sensor and cold start
valve(CSV). The stray voltage that causes the starter run on comes thru the
B-Y wire from the thermotime and CSV. I can disconnect the plugs on either
one of these and the run on stops. Unplugging the B-Y wire at the ignition
resistor did not stop the run on.
This is as far as I got, mostly due to a lack of desire to undo wiring
harnesses to trace further. One thing we did figure out is the resistor
looking thing in the B-Y wires (mentioned previously) was actually a diode.
I assume it was the PO's attempt at solving the problem.
I'd like to give a special thanks to Mike Clemens for his unwavering help in
trying to solve this problem for me.

I thought I had figured out that my starter run on problem was the starter
solenoid and or starter. But after installing a new starter, I still have
the problem. Here is a summary of events.
- I changed the exhaust manifold a few months ago. While removing and
installing the starter, I broke a resister looking component that was in the
blue-yellow wire connected to the solenoid. I didn't see this thing on the
wiring diagram so I left it out. I ran the car for a few weeks without a
problem. Oh ya, did I mention that the run on problem only occurs on a warm
re-start of the car, not at the cold start. So I might not have tried a warm
start during this time.
- Then I tackled the steering column bushing which meant removing the
steering column, ignition switch, etc.
- After I got everything back together, I had the run on problems begin.
- I did the starter relay test i.e., while the run on was occurring, I
removed the relay and the starter run on continued. So ah ha, I concluded
that it was not the ignition switch or relay but had to be the starter or
solenoid.
But as mention above, a new started and solenoid did not solve the
problem. Any help on where to go from here would be appreciated.
Anyone know what the resister in the blue-yellow wire might have been for?
