I've never seen some screen over the air intake underneath the cowl. You could try some mosquito net as is used for windows. If you're going this way, make some nice cover for the edges so it looks professionally installed. That will keep leaves and other debris out. Didn't you cover that hole with an aluminium shield. At least that's what I recall having read or heard in the past.
