I don't know about the legality of such things - but just a note, that if yours is an Automatic Transmission car, then you already have the speed sensor. Simply tap into either of the white wires going to the AT Governor circuit, reference it to ground, and there you go! The white wires, as well as a black ground wires are inside the middle of the three cables that enter the AT connector block mounted on the firewall in the engine compartment.
