I believe it will be difficult for anyone to answer your questions; what happened and "how bad" can only be determined by first inspecting the outside of the transmission to deduce simple problems and then taking out the transmission and opening up the case to see what the deal is. Is there a hole in your transmission case? I can't say that my problem is the same as yours but I had a similar instance when I downshifted too hard and my spindle (103204) broke sending the pin (103114) up into the input shaft tube. This made a hole in the replaceable tube and my transmission leaked oil all over the place. I never had any noise or trouble shifting because I think the pin and all the other parts from the spindle sank to the bottom of the transmission and I immediately fixed the problem. I would recommend that you obviously no longer drive the car and get that transmission out/open to see what the story is. It could be a number of things from a loose shaft lock nut to broken shift bushings and bellows or seals.
