[DML] Noise & Smell - something happened

For the past 2 days I've noticed a loud whining noise (not grinding) when my car (manual trans) is in gear but I have my foot off the accelerator.  Tonight it happened again and the engine was making a real wierd noise. Then the car was consumed by what smelled like burning rubber. Any ideas? I think a belt in the engine compartment slipped off or something.
