As important as the type of relay is the rating. Higher is better as far as current and voltage go. Another "trick" is to take a DPST relay and wire both sides together in parallel so each contact only has to carry 1/2 the load. For inductive loads, like the coils which are used in the door lock circuit, putting a capacitor across the contacts will reduce the arcing and prolong the life of the contacts. Diodes won't do that. Since lighting is mainly a resistive load caps won't help much in the headight circuit. Brands DO matter, don't pick Lucas for instance!!!!
