I have seen and helped with dozens of them. All had blown caps and bad solder joints. Some also had open power transistors and/or burnt wires. The caps fail because the have too low a working voltage spec and just can't hold all of that energy in so they explode. It has been most expediant to repair what we have but the ultimate would be a "plug and play" replacement using better quality components and instead of using comparator technology, using PC controller technology. More and better filtering and protection should also be part of the design goal. For instance, if the wiring gets burnt or a solenoid coil shorts out there is no output protection for the power transistors so they die too. A "sport" mode would be nice and some kind of manual mode like Tiptronic would be nice. An indicator so you know what gear you are in is also a nice touch. It can also become a "limp home" type of shifting if the controller decides to cr-p out. Another feature could be an electronic speedometer. Of course it starts to become an economic issue as to how much you want it to do besides the basic shift control function.
