[DML] Re: Identifying original dealer from Vin List database.

The records do not exist to find out that way. To create a "Chain of
Ownership" you go back through each owner, one by one, eventually you
will get to the origonal selling dealer. You do it by going to the
Motor Vehicle agency in each State the car was titled and registered
in. It can take a while and be costly. Especially if the car was
titled in several States. Not all States will have the records back to
'81. You start with the person that sold the car to you and the State
he lived in and titled the car in. You request a search on that
vehicle and vin #. Forget trying to do it through the dealers. Most
have either changed names or are no longer in business. Most do not
keep records that far back anyway. In the US very few records are kept
for more than 7 years. If you know for a fact that the car was once a
NY car you can also start there. NY has good records going way back.
You *could* also try Carfax.
