Consider this: if ground is not properly connected there can be a
build-up of power seeking its way to a solid ground.
In older cars this is often the case when tail lights are on and when
braking, the tail light dims or is off. Even directional signals show
that kind of behavior by flashing dimmed and having either a tail or
brake light join in flashing.
Side markers often suffer from bad ground as water may leak into the
socket, causing rust and bad ground.
Also, there are cars who's owners changed the front side markers into
a combined marker and directional light (ground to the front
directional light.
Last but not least, the original tail light boards are usually also
prone to have bad connections.
My best guess is to check all concerned sockets, use a multimeter to
check ground and look for power leaks in the circuits involved.
All afore goes for LEDs and standard bulbs alike.
Welmoed.
