I heard a private investigator (not as glamorous a job as it sounds)
talk about his car, and he said that he would often spend hours
sitting with the engine running, waiting for someone to come or go
from a building, etc. He said that the car was fine, but that it had
more "miles" on it than the odometer showed.

I'd say that if your car is otherwise healthy, then idling it for so
long a time won't kill it. :-)
