Yet again, this is objective information only, not an attempt to convert anybody to anything: At the time of its 1981 sales debut, the DeLorean was one of the few vehicles available in the United States with gasoline fuel injection. Catalytic converters were introduced in the 1975 model year. Every single vehicle on a showroom floor at that time was carbureted. Carburetion remained the predominant method of fuel delivery for the remainder of the decade, and well into the 1980's. Most, but not all, vehicles were also equipped with external catalyst. Some people think that carburetion is incompatible with external catalyst. That is an errant misconception. Millions, if not billions, of vehicles were built and sold from 1975 through 1985 with both caburetors and catalytic converters. As stated, in the 1981 model year, neither AMC, Chrysler, nor Ford offered a single fuel injected car. General Motors offered gasoline injection on a few full size Cadillac and Oldsmobile models, and diesel injection on a few others. None of General Motors' compact cars (such as the Citation) were fuel injected. European imports, such as BMW, Mercedes, SAAB, and of course Volvo, offered several fuel injected models. Japanese imports continued to use carburetion (Mazda's rotary engine was available in the RX-7). Surely you are not one of the people who errantly thinks that carburetion and external catalyst can not coexist together. We are both old enough to remember more than 10 years of such. Your particular question can not be answered definitively because, like mufflers, catalytic converters wear and fail at different rates.
