[DML] Low Fuel Light Malfunction

I had my fuel sending unit replaced with a factory original last year.
Since the change, my low fuel warning light no longer works. Yesterday
the fuel tank was very empty. I stopped upgrade at a red light (a very
steep grade) with the car nose pointing up. The light flickered a bit,
and then when I accelerated and moved forward, the light came on solid.
However, when the car is on a flat surface the light never comes on
regardless of how low the fuel is, even when it's bone dry.
The garage that installed the new sending unit refuses to help because
it's not cost effective over a low fuel light to investigate.
Any opinions of how this can be fixed?
