[DML] Shaky Steering

Hey everyone,
I wanted to get some opinions on what could be the problem with my
car. Sometime late last year while pulling into a gas station, my
steering became different. That may sound vague, but it's tough to
describe. It's almost like if the steering column is two pipes within
each other, they are not shaking and hitting against one another. At
the time I didn't hear anything snap or break, so it wasn't obvious.
Additionally, whenever I hit a bump, the black plastic box just behind
the wheel vibrates and makes a shaking noise.
Just to let everyone know, I have driven it (cautiously) to NJ and
back and also a few other places with no issues. A few checks with 2
owners told me that it's not a catastrophic failure and could be a
bushing or something. I do notice that if I unscrew the tilt-steering
screw and let the column lay, it can be moved from side to side a
little.
If you know what this is, can you shed light on it? Would this be a
costly fix? Is the car safe? I'm close to PJ Grady but time and
money make it a bit tough to get to Rob right now. Any help is
appreciated.
Thanks!
