Sorry, but the whole "rotate the engine a bit and pick a valve to
adjust" is more than slightly hit and miss. There is a perfectly good
procedure to follow:
To rotate the engine avoiding taking the exhaust off to access the
crankshaft nut, the easiest method is to put the car in 5th and push it.
On a flat surface, one person can do this. If it's an auto, then it is
possible to rotate the engine using the alternator nut if you take out
the spark plugs.
Whip out #1 spark plug and using a long screwdriver, find TDC. This
corresponds to one of the marks on the crankshaft pulley. I recommend
marking this notch with some bright paint. so as not to confuse with the
other mark.
With #1 at firing stroke (both tappets have play), you can adjust
Inlet 1 Exhaust 1
Inlet 2 Exhaust 3
Inlet 4 Exhaust 6
With #1 on the rock (#1 valves have no play)
Inlet 3 Exhaust 2
Inlet 5 Exhaust 4
Inlet 6 Exhaust 5
As for sealing the covers... I've long ago stopped using any kind of
rocker cover gasket. I just use silicone, on clean surfaces (wiped with
brake cleaner to remove any oil) and I have never had any problems with
leaks afterwards.Compressing the gaskets evenly is a royal pain, whereas
sealant just snugs down and a quarter of a turn later on all the bolts
and they're safe (handily because sealant gets onto the bolt threads too
making them effectively shake-proof!). Do be sparing with the sealant
though as you don't want any great globs of the stuff escaping into your
oil passages!
Renault assembled all the late engines with sealant instead of gaskets.
