The automatics are rarer than the 5-speeds. Desireability is on the
part of the perspective buyer. If the potential buyer can't drive a
"stick" an automatic would be a better choice and maybe worth a bit
more (to him). On the other hand a 5-speed has more performance so for
a buyer who is looking for that he maybe would not even want to buy an
automatic so that would be a detriment. Some buyers are put off by
what they have heard about the automatic being very troublesome and
expensive to fix. From a resale value point-of-view, assuming both
cars of equal condition and mileage, it won't make that much of a
difference. When the car was bought new the automatic cost extra!
