When using pliers to pull on the wires you have to be really careful not to break the inner core. Better to use the pliers on the seal over the plug well and not directly on the ignition wire itself. I have found that if you pull on old, brittle wires with pliers the wires can easily break, especially if they are "stuck" tight onto the plugs. If you break the inner core you usually do not notice it right away. Over a short period of time the motor just starts running worse and worse. Eventually in very humid weather (like when it's raining) it won't even start and the radio seems to have a lot of static all the time. Giving a little twist before pulling on the wires sometimes helps to get the wires "unstuck". I use a very long needle nose type of plier but again, carefully.
