Don't worry Martin! I'm not going to make a gasket for that. I know what you
mean about machining the flat surface. I told the customer who had the
engine pulled out to clean it off carefully and seal it with what the manual
say's which now would be the RTV.

Oh my god.... NO, NO, NO there should not be a gasket between the lower 
crank case and the main block - it retains the main bearing caps! It's a 
perfectly flat, machined surface, and just a thin bead of RTV all round 
is all it requires. (after thoroughly cleaning the faces first of course.
