Bill, In the late 70s and early 80s, there were thousands of electric Datsuns with power steering and air conditioning that were built by Lectra motors. The PS steering had little impact on range. The AC cut range 10-25% depending up use (outside temp). More importantly, these vehicles had a range of 50-70 miles. So for the average commute, the AC had little impact. The reason the AC had a small impact, due to the peukert effect. A small constant drain on the batteries is not a significant as the heavy amp drain on acceleration. A small constant drain allows a deeper discharge, than a high amp drain. I got to drive one of these Datsuns with the AC in October. What a great all electric car. A video on Al Sawyer who built these cars will soon be available. It is who killed the electric car part 2. Part 1 is from the 1900s. and part 3 is the one that talks about the GM. Lectra motors was doing great until (GM and Chrsyler) were able to get control of 51% of the stock through a 3rd party and then, they fired everyone and closed the doors just as Lectra was doubling production to 60 cars per month. BTW, there is an electric car from 1926 in the Museum of Science and Industry here in Chicago. The car has been there for at least 50 years. The sign on the window in front of the car says, GM bought the company in 1926 and then closed it. Gee, even in 1926 GM was making sure electrics were killed.
