Did your wife actually drive a D to know it's too hard or has
she just never driven any car without Power Steering???
AFAIK no conversions have been made so far, allthough
the subject has come up several times in the past.
If you were going to try this I'd suggest looking for an electrical unit,
which is more and more common nowadays and would save you quite
some hassle in installing hydraulics and such. Then you could suffice
with a beefed up alternator, a couple of thick wires from the battery
to the control unit and to the steering column from there.
The actual power consuption of these electrical Power Steering units
would'n bee too much either: my Toyota Aygo has Electrical P/S and the
motor at the end of the steering column is onl about the size of my fist.
Meanwhile it IS strong enough to allow me to stir the wheel lock-to-lock
at a standstill with my pinky...
Hope this helps,
JAN
