I thought one form of a voltage regulator was called a "spark gap". It
was used for pulsed lasers in the early days, as voltage built up it
would then conduct to provide a pulse of voltage to the illuminate the
laser light source. What I'm trying to say, is you need no more voltage
then that required to produce a spark. If 18,000 volts takes care of
that, having 40 kv is not needed. The voltage is not stored then
released as in capacitive discharge, it is built up gradually until the
spark is created. It has a rise time. The things that influence the
rise time are, resistance, leakage, and fuel ionization. Resistance is
affected by wire conductor condition, carbon deposits on distributor
cap, rotor and spark plugs; leakage is caused by insufficient hv wire
insulation; and fuel ionization is affected by sharp edges on spark plug
electrodes (so multi-electrode plugs do help).
So yes I agree, having a higher output voltage will not improve
performance unless one of the items I pointed out above are deficient.
Higher output voltage can extent the useful life of those components.
You can increase the spark plug gap to utilize your higher output
voltage and thus maybe ignite a leaner fuel mixture that may not have
ignited with a weaker spark.
Capacitive discharge is better that it will overcome some insulation
leakage that a standard ignition cannot, thus increasing the useful life.
