The easiest way is to simply remove the center (5th) pin of the A/C panel relay, or replace it with a 4 pin (SPST). This will make your lights only come on with the headlights. You can get as creative as you want, such as wiring in a resistor to provide further dimming, etc.
The best way is to replace the A/C panel bulbs with LEDs and forget about it. I'm sporting LED lights, with a jumper / resistor and couldn't be happier. All the wiring is kept stock, except for the relay running my perimeter lights.

My wiring is all new, but I believe the usual mod is to move the A/C
panel line to the low beam relay. A stock owner may be able to clarify
this.

the mechanics and design. Not anything grotesque, but whatever will
keep making more of a perfect car. How did you rewire your A/C panel
so that it only becomes lit when the headlights are on. I have been
wanting to change that for a while because recently I noticed that
panel getting quite hot during the day.
