I personally think they used it because it was a cool car, and they had
the excuse. I'd be surprised if it ever saw a lot of "official" work,
more like Detective Brown signing it out for the day when he was going
to stop by his sons soccer practice...

I think you're confusing "undercover" with "stakeout" or "surveillance".
It actually makes sense to use a D for undercover work. If they were
trying
to bust another drug ring, and the cops shows up in a D, it is a pretty
good
cover to fool the perps. That is, until word hits the street that the
cops
are using a delorean. But if they used it for three years, it must have
been working well for them.
