Funny -- I always that that's why alternators produce more voltage than batteries in their normal discharge state. Running 13-15 volts has always had the added benefit of recharging my batteries as well as powering the rest of my cars. While it is true that the battery is not physically inserted between the alternator and the rest of the vehicle, I would argue that by elevating overall system voltage the alternator very much recharges it. Note also that a vehicle's electrical system will not work with an alternator alone, but it will work with a battery alone.
