Maybe 1 in 1000 will feel its okay to open your front trunk - insert
your own stupid justification for this here.
A sign, stantions, or a chain will all help most of these rare
transgressors remember their place. Being there to tell them not too
eliminate nearly all of them.
It's not a matter of IF someone will do something without thinking, but
simply when.
