Undoubtedly they thought about this when they designed the car.
The prototype had the fuel tank in a more central location. Where
it's at now is still pretty good. Your guess is as good as mine which
is a better place, but it has to go somewhere.
In a nasty frontal collision, trauma will probably kill you before the
fuel tank breaks, which is definitely the preferable way to go, for my
vote. I wouldn't worry about it.
There is always the risk of maiming or death when we get into any car.
I would rate the risk of "firey death in a Delorean" much lower than
"death by roll-over from overcorrection" or "death by some stupid
other driver crashing into me".
