John,
Isolators are there to prevent one battery from forcing current through the
other. In two battery systems one battery almost always has a slightly
different voltage output than the other due to differences in charge and
condition. If two or more batteries were put directly in parallel, the
stronger of the two would discharge the other by forcing a current through
it.
It has nothing to do with a cooling down period.
