I don't think it's that dangerous either.
For example...
Just today I over filled the tank at the gas station because the trigger didn't
automatically click off. I then put the car in a garage. After a while the
temperature difference from the outside to the garage caused the gas to expand,
push my fuel pump & boot up off of the tank and gas leaked out all over the
floor.
Lesson Learned = drive your car more than 1 mile after over filling your tank ;-)

As dangerous as this post may make it appear, it is not all that bad.
You have to allow some way of venting excess pressure or you *could*
cause the tank or a hose to burst. All you need to do is take the vent
hose from the fuel tank, run it up to as high a point as you can and
loop it back down in a place away from any hot spots. This is what was
done on cars before vapor recovery systems. Do not try to vent it
directly into the motor. Raw gas could get in and a backfire could
cause unintended combustion!
