Thanks guys... I'll try it this way instead.
I had inserted the tube into the fuel unit and then dropped the whole
assembly in at an angle, because it is so hard to insert. It makes it
easy to get the tube in, but then you cannot get the hose on to connect
the motor to the tube.
Would it work to use a significantly longer hose between the idle speed
motor and the intake tube?

Push the air intake flap wide open and you can see the tapered end of
the brass pipe as you put it in - this often helps with seeing what you
are doing wrong.
