[DML] Death of 17167

As I was driving back to Charleston, SC on a clear sunny monday in May
on I-26, a car stopped in front of me in the left lane.  I was going
70 and I braked forcefully, but continued straight, I was far enough
behind the  other car that I was pretty sure I wouldn't hit him.  I
had driven 17167 over 70,000 miles myself, in all conditions, I knew
that car well. I had just bled the brakes the day before and had no
problems. All of the sudden I heard a loud noise and I began to spin
clockwise into the right lane and off into the shoulder.  The left
side of the car hit the bushes in the shoulder first and I continued
to spin. If the right lane wasnt clear I wouldn't be around to tell
the story.  It was pretty scary.  Every fender received some damage,
and the left front fender is absolutely destroyed, and the underbody
is significantly damaged on the left side of the car. The frame was
relatively spared however.  It appears the left rear hubcarrier broke
during braking.  (the bottom of the shock tower scraped the asphalt in
a few spots before I hit the grass).  It appears there was previous
damage to the hubcarrier from a old accident.  My right rear hub
carrier broke 3 years ago after having my rear calipers rebuilt.  The
car spun in a similar fashion after a hard brake but at that time I
was only traveling 30 mph, and other damage was insignificant.  I had
the car flatbedded home and insurance has totaled it (although, no
salvage title in TN)  and paid out (still waiting on check).  They are
giving me about middle blue book value which is about what I think I
could have gotten for her prior to the accident.  This car was a daily
driver and parked outside so I didn't have an "agreed upon value
insurance" since I had no limit on how much I could drive it and I was
under the age of 25, I couldn't find anyone to do that.  Insurance let
me keep the car, so I still have it, but with every body panel damaged
significantly and the damage to the rear suspension and fiberglass
underbody it will probably remain a parts car.  (or maybe a candidate
to be painted?)  I uploaded pictures to the album death of 17167.  I
haven't decided if I will get another delorean as my daily driver.  It
was wonderful when I didn't need to drive much, but I had put over
10,000 miles/year on that car with it as my only mode of
transportation for the past 7 years.  I might get something a little
more practical now.
