It's not speed, it's a measure of force (or potential). I'm not sure what
the "speed" is you might be thinking of, other than the number of cycles of
an alternating current, like you have in your house. An ampere maybe is
what you are thinking of, as that is a measurement of current (electron
flow).
Anyway, a car uses direct current, and the gage is measuring the amount of
electrical force in your charging system (and/or battery.) Normal will be
in the neighborhood of 13 volts. The gage is calibrated to take into other
electrical considerations (resistance and amps). If the gage reads low, say
7 or 8 volts, you could have a loose belt or a defective alternator or bad
battery.

Can someone tell me what the Volt gage is on the car for? I think Volt
is the speed at which power is traveling, right? So what is the
specific purpose of this gage? Mine is always just a smidge above the
center mark.
