Jon,
Luckily the whole pump system can be removed w/o dropping the tank!
Just drain the tank, remove the fuel pump, and disassemble the pick-up
bottom and retaining wires while it is still in the tank. The yellow pan-shaped
part is flexible and can be flexed as it is removed from the tank.
When reassembling, be sure to avoid kinking the pick-up line (it can easily
be twisted while putting the pump back in).

Is it possible to get the fuel pump/pickup assembly
out of the tank while the tank is still mounted in the
car? The whole pickup mechanism looks as if it needs
to be drawn out at an angle, and I'm not sure if this
can be done with the tank is in the car. Thanks.
