You really have to look and see where the motion is getting lost. It
could be anything from loose hardware to a cracked bracket. Raise the
car and have a helper move the stick side-to-side while you go
underneath and look for anything loose. It *could* also be in the area
by the shifter so you might want to start there first. Worse case it
is a problem inside the transmission but that is unlikely.
