Someone suggested that I could just rewire the front speakers and still let the back speakers use the common ground. Will that work?

What you suggest below will most likely NOT work on any current
radio. The Craig uses a floating or common ground wire for all four
speakers (or at least a common ground between the left and right, as I
recall). This WILL totally fark up any current technology receiver
that depends on dedicated (non-shared) grounds run to each speaker.
So using the old harness wired up to a new radio will result in
horrible fidelity, if the receiver even works at all. Before doing
what you plan, you should search the archives for a long discussion
about "floating grounds".
